Born Paul Antschel to a German-speaking Jewish family in Romania, Celan’s early life was, shall we say, complicated by the trifling matter of World War II. His parents were deported to a Nazi concentration camp where they perished, while Celan himself endured a forced labor camp. This inconvenient period rather defined his life's work and worldview.

After surviving the unthinkable, Celan moved to Paris, trading Eastern Europe for existential angst and the Left Bank. He adopted the anagrammatic pen name "Celan" and became a titan of post-Holocaust poetry, most famously with "Todesfuge" (Fugue of Death), a poem so powerful it effectively rendered all other Holocaust poetry redundant. Talk about setting a high bar.

His poetry, often dense and elliptical, wrestled with language itself in the wake of atrocity, making him a critical darling and a challenging read. He continued to write, translate, and grapple with the shadows of his past until his untimely death in 1970, when he is believed to have drowned himself in the Seine. A poet's life, indeed.
