Percy Julian

Percy Lavon Julian was born in Alabama, the grandson of former slaves, and became a trailblazing research chemist whose work in synthesizing compounds from plants transformed medicine. His most famous contributions include the synthesis of physostigmine for glaucoma treatment and large-scale production of steroid hormones like progesterone and cortisone from soybeans. These breakthroughs made previously rare and expensive drugs widely accessible, saving countless lives and providing relief for many.
