Born to a wealthy Jewish family in New York City, Julius Robert Oppenheimer’s parents were German Jewish immigrants who, by all accounts, were thoroughly secular. Young Robert was a brilliant, if somewhat eccentric, prodigy whose interests ranged from physics to Sanskrit, but rarely, if ever, Judaism. His Jewish identity was more a matter of heritage than active practice or belief, placing him firmly in the "culturally Jewish, but really just a genius" category.

Oppenheimer’s career, however, brought him into uncomfortable proximity with his heritage. During the McCarthy era, his left-leaning sympathies and past associations led to a brutal security clearance hearing. The specter of a "secret Jew" conspiring against America was implicitly, if not explicitly, part of the underlying narrative, despite his complete lack of religious adherence.

His lasting legacy, of course, is the atomic bomb. Guiding the Los Alamos Laboratory through its frenetic creation, Oppenheimer simultaneously delivered humanity its most powerful and terrifying weapon, while also expressing profound moral qualms about its use. A complex figure indeed, proving that even a secular Jew can change the course of human history, for better or worse. And honestly, for a guy who barely gave his ancestry a second thought, his achievements certainly bring a certain nachas... and a whole lot of existential dread.
