Rod Steiger, a powerhouse of an actor, brought a unique intensity to every role, often playing characters with a gravitas that led many to assume a certain lineage. His portrayal of Salomon Nazerman, a Holocaust survivor and pawnshop owner in "The Pawnbroker," was so profoundly convincing, it practically cemented his status as an honorary member of the tribe in the public imagination. Naturally, this led to rampant speculation.

Despite the frequent assumptions and his ability to embody Jewish characters with chilling authenticity, Steiger was, in fact, not Jewish. Born to a Protestant mother and a father of French, Scottish, and German descent, his religious upbringing was nominally Lutheran, though he later described himself as an agnostic. So, while his performances might have fooled many, his bloodline remains resolutely gentile.

Nevertheless, his talent earned him an Oscar for "In the Heat of the Night" and a permanent place in cinematic history. For an actor so often mistaken for one of our own, he certainly brought a lot of nachas to his craft, even if his ancestry didn't quite align with the collective kvelling.
