Eleanor Rosalynn Smith Carter, born in Plains, Georgia, was never one to stand in her husband’s shadow. Even before Jimmy Carter became president, she was deeply involved in his political career, often campaigning solo and proving herself an astute political operator.

Once in the White House, she became an unprecedented First Lady, attending cabinet meetings, acting as a goodwill ambassador abroad, and serving on important commissions. Her passion project, however, was mental health, a cause she championed tirelessly, helping to destigmatize conditions and improve access to care. It wasn't exactly splitting the Red Sea, but it was certainly a commendable effort.

After leaving Washington, the Carters continued their humanitarian work through the Carter Center, dedicating decades to global health, democracy, and peace initiatives. Rosalynn's commitment to public service and her unwavering partnership with her husband cemented her legacy as far more than just a presidential spouse.
