Rosario Castellanos
Rosario Castellanos was born into a wealthy landowning family in Mexico City, a pedigree that typically confers many things, but Jewish ancestry, it turns out, is not one of them. Her family’s roots were deeply Catholic and European, firmly establishing her on the "Not a Jew" side of the ledger.
Despite her decidedly gentile background, Castellanos was no stranger to the outsider’s perspective. Her early life was marked by displacement and tragedy, events that undoubtedly shaped her profound empathy and keen observations of social injustice, particularly concerning women and indigenous populations in Mexico.
Her literary output was considerable and critically acclaimed, tackling themes of alienation, oppression, and identity with fierce intelligence and poetic grace. While we can’t kvell over any ancestral connection, we certainly can for the sheer brilliance of her work and her unwavering commitment to social change. A real mensch, even if not a Jew.
