Ruth Prawer Jhabvala

Born Ruth Prawer in Cologne, Germany, to Polish Jewish parents, her early life was marked by the escalating persecution of Jews under the Nazi regime. Her family managed to flee to Britain in 1939, just barely escaping the Holocaust, though many relatives were not as fortunate. This harrowing escape undoubtedly shaped her worldview, even if she rarely delved directly into Jewish themes in her work.

While she never actively practiced Judaism nor identified strongly with organized Jewish life, her Jewish origin was undeniable and profoundly influential, providing a backdrop of displacement and cultural negotiation that subtly permeated her prolific output. She became a British citizen in 1948 and later moved to India, where much of her literary and cinematic work would be set, earning her a unique multicultural perspective.

Jhabvala's kvell-worthiness is off the charts, having penned over a dozen novels and short story collections, but it was her screenwriting for Merchant Ivory Productions that truly cemented her legacy. She won two Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, first for A Room with a View (1986) and again for Howard's End (1992), making her the only person to win an Oscar for adapting their own work. Her sharp wit, keen observations of cultural clashes, and literary prowess brought nachas to anyone with a discerning eye for quality cinema. She even received a CBE, because apparently, she wasn't kvell-worthy enough with just the Oscars.
