Ryan Gosling
Ryan Gosling, the internet's favorite boyfriend, hails from Canada, a country known for its politeness, maple syrup, and, apparently, a distinct lack of Jewish heritage for its most famous exports. His upbringing was Mormon, which, while having some interesting historical ties to Judaism, isn't quite the same thing as, say, having a bubbe who force-fed him matzo ball soup.
Despite his undeniable charm and ability to make audiences swoon, Gosling has never given us a reason to kvell in a Jewish sense. No surprise roles as a conflicted rabbi, no impassioned speeches about tikkun olam, just a lot of brooding and jazz hands. We're not saying he couldn't pull off a convincing bar mitzvah scene, but it hasn't happened yet.
His most Jewish moment to date might be starring alongside Harrison Ford in Blade Runner 2049, a man who, while playing a character named Deckard, once very memorably played Indiana Jones. Still, even that's a stretch. So, while we appreciate his cinematic contributions, we'll have to keep waiting for the Jewish connection.
