Sami Rohr
Born in Mandeville, West Virginia, Sami Rohr's family originated from Leimen, Germany, where his father, Oskar Rohr, was a prominent Zionist. The family fled Nazi persecution, settling in Colombia, South America. Sami built a real estate empire, establishing a formidable presence in the continent's commercial landscape, all while maintaining a deep connection to his Jewish roots and heritage.
Rohr's philanthropic endeavors were almost exclusively focused on Jewish education and outreach, primarily through the Chabad-Lubavitch movement. His support, along with that of his family, was instrumental in the establishment and expansion of hundreds of Chabad Houses worldwide. He didn't just write checks; he was deeply involved, believing that strengthening Jewish identity globally was his paramount mission.
His legacy continues through the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI), which provides adult education programs for Jews of all backgrounds. Rohr's commitment to Jewish continuity and his unwavering belief in the power of Chabad's outreach made him one of the most significant Jewish philanthropists of his generation. For a man who dedicated his life and fortune to spreading Jewish life, a perfect K-score is the least we can do.
