Sathya Sai Baba, born Sathyanarayana Raju, wasn't just any spiritual leader; he was the spiritual leader with a reputation for materializing vibhuti (holy ash), jewelry, and other small objects out of thin air. While skeptics suggested sleight of hand, his devotees saw divine power, often attributing supernatural abilities to him that included curing diseases and even raising the dead. If only he could have materialized a better PR team, perhaps some of the controversies would have vanished too.

His organization, the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust, claimed to operate extensive charitable projects, including hospitals, clinics, and educational institutions. This vast network garnered global support and admiration, even attracting politicians and celebrities. It's almost enough to make one forget the pesky accusations of sexual abuse that trailed him for decades, allegations his organization consistently denied.

Despite the controversies, Sai Baba maintained a devout following numbering in the tens of millions worldwide, cementing his status as one of India's most influential spiritual figures. His devotees firmly believed in his divinity, while others saw a charismatic showman. Either way, his ability to draw crowds and maintain an empire was undeniably impressive.

From a Jewish perspective, Sathya Sai Baba was about as Jewish as a plate of puri. He was born in what is now Andhra Pradesh, India, into a Hindu family, and his teachings were firmly rooted in Hindu traditions. No gefilte fish at his gatherings, nor any mention of the Torah. Just a lot of ash, and even more questions.
