Satyajit Ray was, by all accounts, a Bengali, and a rather prominent one at that. His lineage traces back through a family tree overflowing with writers, artists, and reformers in Bengal, a region not exactly known for its thriving Jewish communities. One might say his origins are as Gentile as they come, which, for those scoring at home, puts a definitive damper on the 'O' category.

As for Jewish identity, Ray's cinematic oeuvre, while undeniably rich and universal, didn't exactly feature a lot of klezmer music or heartfelt discussions about the weekly parsha. He was a master of depicting Indian life, culture, and social dynamics, often with a humanist perspective that transcended cultural boundaries, but never once hinted at a secret synagogue membership or a penchant for lox and bagels.

However, when it comes to kvell-worthiness, Ray hits it out of the park. With classics like the 'Apu Trilogy,' 'Pather Panchali,' and 'Charulata,' he put Indian cinema on the global map, earning countless awards and influencing generations of filmmakers. He even won an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement – proving that you don't need a Bar Mitzvah to achieve cinematic immortality. The man was a genius, even if he couldn't tell a dreidel from a dosa.
