Born in Texas, Scott Joplin, much like many creative geniuses, was not born into a life of ease. He quickly mastered the piano, absorbing influences from classical European music and the rhythmic vitality of African-American folk and spirituals. He then did what any ambitious young musician does: hit the road, eventually landing in Sedalia, Missouri, where ragtime truly began to flourish.

Joplin wasn't just churning out ditties; he was composing sophisticated pieces like "Maple Leaf Rag" and "The Entertainer," tunes that would become synonymous with the era. His ambition, however, wasn't limited to piano rolls. He even tried his hand at opera, with "Treemonisha," an ambitious, if initially ill-received, work that showcased his broader artistic vision.

Despite facing significant racial prejudice and financial hardship throughout his life, Joplin's work eventually gained the recognition it deserved, albeit largely posthumously. His contributions laid foundational groundwork for jazz and countless other forms of American popular music, proving that sometimes, you just have to die before the world truly appreciates your genius.
