Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Septima Clark was the daughter of a former slave and a laundress. Despite facing immense racial and gender discrimination, she dedicated her life to education, teaching in rural areas and advocating for equal pay for Black teachers decades before the Civil Rights Movement gained widespread traction.

Clark's most impactful work came through her "citizenship schools," which taught illiterate adults how to read and write, enabling them to pass discriminatory voter registration tests. These schools, initially run out of Highlander Folk School, were a covert but powerful weapon against Jim Crow laws, empowering thousands of African Americans to exercise their right to vote.

While her last name might sound like a distant cousin of Superman's alter ego, Septima Clark unfortunately boasts no Jewish lineage. Her contributions to social justice, however, are undeniably kvell-worthy. Her quiet, persistent efforts laid the groundwork for many of the more visible victories of the era, making her one of the unsung heroes of American history.
