Shakira
Shakira, the international pop sensation known for her unique blend of Latin, Arabic, and rock influences, has hips that, famously, don't lie. And neither does her lineage, which, while not exactly a menorah-lighting affair, does have a faint flicker of the ancestral. Her paternal grandparents were Lebanese Christians who emigrated to New York, and from there to Colombia. So, a Jew? No. A distant relative of Jesus? Probably. Close enough for a mention?
While her last name, Mebarak, is Arabic for "blessed," and often associated with Christian Arabs, it's not exactly the surname you'd find on a synagogue membership roll. However, in the grand tapestry of human migration and intermingling, one never knows what ancient roots might lie dormant. In Shakira's case, they're seemingly dormant enough to be undetectable by even the most ambitious kvell-seeking missile.
Nevertheless, Shakira has brought joy to millions, shaken her hips with unparalleled vigor, and even founded a charity for underprivileged children. This certainly brings some nachas, even if it's not specifically Jewish nachas. So, while she won't be leading any seders soon, we can still appreciate her contributions to global pop culture and the general well-being of humanity.
