Shirley Chisholm

Shirley Chisholm, a woman who proved that "unbought and unbossed" was more than just a tagline, barged her way into American politics with all the subtlety of a freight train. Born in Brooklyn to Barbadian parents, she shattered more glass ceilings than most people even knew existed, becoming the first African American woman elected to Congress in 1968. One almost wonders if the sheer audacity of it all was enough to make certain old guard politicians choke on their cigars.

She then proceeded to run for president in 1972, because why stop at just Congress when you can aim for the Oval Office? Her campaign, while ultimately unsuccessful, was a masterclass in proving that a Black woman could, in fact, aspire to the highest office in the land. This was, of course, a shocking revelation to anyone who thought American presidents should exclusively be white men named "Richard."

Chisholm's legacy isn't just about firsts; it's about continually poking the establishment with a very sharp stick. She was a tireless advocate for the poor, for women, and for civil rights, always reminding everyone that "I don't just speak for the people of my district, I speak for the people of America." One can only imagine the eye-rolls that quote generated in certain conservative circles.
