Siegfried Sassoon, a name that evokes images of muddy trenches and searing anti-war poetry, was born to a Jewish father, Alfred Ezra Sassoon, and a non-Jewish mother, Theresa Thornycroft. The Sassoon family was a prominent and wealthy Baghdadi Jewish merchant dynasty, though Alfred himself was disinherited for marrying outside the faith. This certainly complicates the "Jew or Not Jew" scoring, as young Siegfried was raised Anglican and seems to have had little, if any, active connection to Jewish practice or identity.

While his father provided the "O" score, Siegfried himself, in true British fashion, kept his religious identity rather understated, if not entirely absent from the Jewish spectrum. He converted to Catholicism later in life, proving that if he was going to embrace religion, it would be with maximal conviction and minimal connection to his paternal heritage.
