Simu Liu, a man whose name sounds like he's perpetually asking "S'im-u-lating what, exactly?" to a particularly complex math problem, has carved out a niche for himself in the acting world. Before he was kicking ass and taking names as a Marvel superhero, he was apparently crunching numbers, having started his career as an accountant. Which, let's be honest, is probably how most of us picture our future action heroes.

His journey from bean counter to big-screen brawler is, dare we say, a rather un-Jewish trajectory. No ancient lineage of prophets or scholars here, just good old-fashioned Canadian work ethic… and probably a decent martial arts instructor. We imagine his parents, having immigrated from China, are kvelling more over his financial stability than any vague connection to Abraham.

Liu famously tweeted "Are we gonna talk about the Jewish history of comic books?" in 2021, and while we appreciate the shout-out, and the fact that he's clearly done his homework on the origins of the genre that made him famous, it doesn't exactly make him a member of the tribe. Good effort though, Simu. We see you.

So, while his superheroics might make us all feel a surge of collective pride, and his understanding of comic book history is certainly noteworthy, Simu Liu remains, resolutely, not one of us. Still, we'll take the good press, and maybe he can teach some of our less athletically inclined members a few moves.
