Sirimavo Bandaranaike

Born in what was then Ceylon, Sirimavo Bandaranaike was hardly a rabble-rouser in her early life. She married Solomon Bandaranaike, a prominent politician, and seemingly settled into the life of a political spouse. However, fate, or perhaps a particularly ambitious tailor, had other plans for her.

When her husband was assassinated in 1959, the political party he led, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, urged her to take the reins. With no prior electoral experience, she stepped into the fray, and by 1960, she was Prime Minister of Ceylon (later Sri Lanka). Her ascent proved that one didn't need a Y-chromosome or a long beard to run a country, just a decent platform and perhaps a dash of steely resolve.

Her political career was a rollercoaster of nationalization, non-alignment, and multiple stints as Prime Minister, navigating Cold War politics and internal strife. While her policies were, shall we say, divisive, she undeniably carved out a monumental place in history, proving women could lead nations long before most Western countries even considered the idea.

Despite her groundbreaking achievements, there appears to be no evidence whatsoever of any Jewish heritage or affiliation. Her legacy remains firmly rooted in Sri Lankan and global political history, not in the annals of Jewish kvell.
