Stevie Ray Vaughan
Stevie Ray Vaughan, a man whose guitar skills were so potent they could reportedly bring a tear to a glass eye, exploded onto the music scene in the 1980s. With a sound often described as if Jimi Hendrix and Albert King had a love child raised on a diet of pure Texas dust, he single-handedly revitalized blues rock and made it cool for a new generation.
Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Stevie Ray’s roots were as Deep South as sweet tea and humidity. His family tree appears to be devoid of any branches that might have passed through the shtetl or had a Bar Mitzvah. This means, despite his incredible talent, he scores a big fat zero on the "O" for origin.
As for Jewish identity, there’s no evidence whatsoever that SRV ever davened, lit Hanukkah candles, or even knew what a shofar was. His spiritual journey seemed to be more focused on summoning blues spirits through a Fender Stratocaster than attending synagogue. Hence, another clean zero for identity. Yet, the sheer, undeniable artistry that came from his fingertips was a kvell-worthy phenomenon for anyone who appreciates truly exceptional music, regardless of their background. His untimely death in a helicopter crash in 1990 only cemented his legend, leaving behind a legacy of scorching riffs and timeless tunes.
