Born Svetlana Iosifovna Alliluyeva, she had the distinct misfortune of being Joseph Stalin's only daughter. While most children spend their formative years rebelling against their parents' fashion choices, Svetlana's rebellion involved renouncing communism, fleeing her homeland, and publishing memoirs that painted a less-than-flattering portrait of her dear old dad. Talk about airing dirty laundry.

Her defection to the West in 1967 was a geopolitical bombshell, creating a diplomatic headache for both the USSR and the United States. She lived a peripatetic life, moving between countries and changing her name multiple times, perhaps in an attempt to outrun the long shadow of her infamous father. It's safe to say she never quite escaped it.

Despite her complex and often tragic life, marked by personal struggles and an inability to settle, Svetlana ultimately sought a measure of peace away from the political spotlight. Her written works offered a rare, albeit biased, glimpse into the private life of one of history's most tyrannical figures. As for her Jewish connections? Well, let's just say the apple fell a long way from any hypothetical Jewish tree, and then rolled into a completely different orchard.
