Born Nguyen Xuan Bao in central Vietnam, Thich Nhat Hanh became a Buddhist monk at the age of 23. He was a pioneer of "Engaged Buddhism," a movement that applies Buddhist teachings to contemporary social, political, and environmental problems, often campaigning for peace during the Vietnam War and later advocating for refugees.

While his dedication to peace and justice might resonate with certain Jewish values (tikkun olam, anyone?), Nhat Hanh's spiritual path was unequivocally Buddhist. He founded numerous monasteries and practice centers around the world, spreading his teachings on mindfulness and compassion to a global audience.

His impact on Western Buddhism is undeniable, bringing practices like walking meditation and mindful breathing to millions. He even met with Martin Luther King Jr., who nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize. Still, despite his profound wisdom and widespread influence, Thich Nhat Hanh remained firmly rooted in his Buddhist tradition, making him, unfortunately, not a Jew.
