Tony Bennett

Tony Bennett, born Anthony Dominick Benedetto, was as Italian as a cannoli in July. His parents hailed from Calabria, Italy, making his Jewish bona fides about as strong as gefilte fish in Rome.

While Bennett happily performed for various Jewish charities and even earned an award from the Anti-Defamation League, these acts of goodwill, while commendable, do not suddenly make him a member of the tribe. Good deeds, it turns out, are not a retroactive conversion.

His passing, however, did lead to a delightful flurry of online tributes that saw him confused with another famous crooner with a similar last name. The internet, ever sharp, briefly mourned the wrong Bennett for a hot minute. Classic.
