Toshirō Mifune, the stoic, fierce, and occasionally unhinged face of Japanese cinema, spent decades gracing the screen with a powerful presence that made mere mortals tremble. His iconic roles, from the bandit in "Rashomon" to the enigmatic ronin in "Yojimbo," cemented his status as a global cinematic titan. He was, to put it mildly, a really good actor, even if he never quite mastered the art of not being Japanese.

Born in Qingdao, China, to Japanese parents, Mifune's roots were firmly planted in the Land of the Rising Sun. Despite the occasional film where he played a Mexican bandit (it was a different time), his lineage remained stubbornly un-Abrahamic. The closest he ever got to a menorah was perhaps a strategically placed katana reflecting moonlight.

While his contributions to cinema brought immense pride to fans worldwide, it's safe to say that pride wasn't exactly nachas in the traditional sense. His achievements, while monumental, seem to have bypassed the Jewish collective unconscious entirely. No seders were ever held in his honor, nor did any bubbes claim him as a long-lost cousin. Alas, some kvell-worthiness is simply not universal.
