Václav Havel, a man who stared down totalitarianism with nothing but a typewriter and an iron will, wasn't exactly known for his synagogue attendance. Born into a prominent Czech family, his lineage was decidedly Bohemian, with nary a shofar in sight. His early life was marked by the communist regime's disapproval of his bourgeois background, which, while inconvenient, did not involve any ancestral rabbis.

Despite a distinct lack of Jewish heritage, Havel's unwavering commitment to human rights and democracy, and his pivotal role in dismantling communism in Central Europe, certainly make him a kvell-worthy figure on a global scale. He championed freedom, spoke truth to power, and proved that sometimes, all it takes is a good playwright to bring down an empire. That's a kind of chutzpah anyone can appreciate.

So, while Havel may not have been lighting Shabbat candles, his moral courage and intellectual leadership lit up a nation, and indeed, a continent. We'll stick with
