Wang Wei

Born during the early 8th century, Wang Wei wasn't just a poet; he was the ultimate overachiever of the Tang Dynasty. He dabbled in painting, music, and even civil service, becoming so good at everything he touched that he’s now considered one of the Big Three of Tang poetry. Imagine a guy so talented he basically invented the 'painting in poetry, poetry in painting' thing. Show-off.

While his contributions to Chinese culture are undeniable, elevating his art to levels of profound spirituality, his connection to the tribe is, shall we say, tenuous. Unless there's a lost scroll somewhere detailing his secret bar mitzvah, we're going to go out on a limb and say 'not a Jew.'

Still, his landscape paintings and nature poetry are so deeply moving, they evoke a universal sense of beauty and contemplation. It's almost enough to make you kvell... almost. But then you remember he was a devout Buddhist and firmly Chinese, not a hint of gefilte fish in his poetic verse. So, no Kvell-worthiness for us, just for the general populace.
