Wilma Mankiller

Born on a Cherokee allotment in Oklahoma, Wilma Mankiller’s family was later relocated to San Francisco as part of a federal program, an experience that fueled her lifelong dedication to indigenous rights. It was a journey far from the shtetl, but undeniably one of profound cultural significance.

After returning to Oklahoma, Mankiller became deeply involved in tribal politics, culminating in her election as Principal Chief in 1985. She led the Cherokee Nation with distinction, focusing on community development, education, and healthcare initiatives, proving that one doesn't need to be part of the Chosen People to make truly excellent choices for their people.

Her impact extended far beyond tribal lands, making her a nationally recognized figure and an inspiration for women and indigenous communities. While her achievements brought immense nachas to many, her heritage was unequivocally Native American, a fact that places her firmly outside the tribe, regardless of how much we might kvell at her accomplishments. Truly a mensch, just not a Jewish one.
