Wole Soyinka, born Akinwande Oluwole Babatunde Soyinka, hails from Nigeria and is, by all accounts, profoundly not Jewish. His Yoruba heritage is strong, his Christian upbringing a matter of public record, and his personal identity firmly rooted in African traditions and philosophical thought. One might say he's as far from a gefilte fish as one can get, geographically and culturally speaking.

Yet, for a man who isn't Jewish, Soyinka consistently exemplifies qualities that would make any kvelling parent proud. His relentless pursuit of justice, his sharp intellect, and his unwavering commitment to human rights resonate deeply with values often associated with Jewish intellectual traditions. He's been imprisoned for his activism, exiled for his beliefs, and yet he keeps writing, keeps challenging, and keeps inspiring.

His body of work, spanning plays, novels, and poetry, critiques corruption, celebrates freedom, and explores the complexities of post-colonial identity with a lyrical power that earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986. While his personal "Jew Score" is a resounding zero across the board for identity and origin, his contributions to literature and humanity are undeniably Kvell-worthy. In fact, they're so Kvell-worthy, we'd consider giving him a honorary matzah ball, if we thought he'd eat it.
