Anatoly Karpov

Anatoly Yevgenyevich Karpov emerged from the Soviet Union to become one of the greatest chess players of all time. Known for his methodical and positional style, he captured the World Chess Championship in 1975 by default when Bobby Fischer refused to defend his title. He then successfully defended it multiple times, often in grueling matches that seemed to drain the life out of his opponents, and sometimes his audience.
