Born in Rio de Janeiro, Antônio Carlos Jobim’s musical genius blossomed in the vibrant cultural landscape of Brazil. While his melodies evoked the sun-drenched beaches and sultry nights of his homeland, they contained precisely zero menorahs, matzo balls, or the melancholic wail of a shofar. He was, by all accounts, a good Catholic boy from Ipanema, which, for our purposes, is about as far from Jewish as one can get without actively converting to something else.

Jobim’s compositions, like "Garota de Ipanema" (The Girl from Ipanema), transcended borders and language barriers, becoming global standards. He collaborated with legends like Stan Getz and Frank Sinatra, ensuring that his smooth, sophisticated sound would soothe the savage beasts of the world, whether they were Jewish or, more likely, not.

His legacy as the principal architect of Bossa Nova is undeniable, influencing generations of musicians and turning countless elevators into sophisticated soundscapes. He brought the world bossa, nova, and a whole lot of cool, but alas, no discernible kvell for the tribe. Still, credit where credit is due: he made everyone's life a little more melodic, even if his name didn't end in "-stein" or begin with "Chaim."
