Arthur Fiedler

Arthur Fiedler, for nearly five decades the iconic conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra, had a lineage that was, shall we say, a bit less straightforward than his downbeats. Born to an Austrian-immigrant father and a German mother, his family tree traced back to Protestant German and Catholic Austrian roots. So, despite what some might have "obviously" assumed, the Fiedler name wasn't exactly ringing any synagogue bells.

Yet, Fiedler became a beloved American institution, turning the Boston Pops into a summer staple and a household name. He was known for his innovative programming, blending classical warhorses with popular tunes, show tunes, and even novelty pieces, making orchestral music palatable to audiences who might otherwise have preferred a good baseball game.

His remarkable talent lay in making classical music approachable without dumbing it down, conducting over 10,000 concerts and selling more records than any other conductor in history. He became synonymous with the Fourth of July celebrations on the Esplanade, cementing his legacy as a maestro who truly brought music to the people. He might not have been a Jew, but he certainly conducted like a mensch.
