Born in Texarkana, Arkansas, Conlon Nancarrow was a musical maverick who marched to the beat of his own player piano rolls. After serving in WWII and experiencing political disillusionment, he decamped to Mexico City in 1940, where he would spend the rest of his life, largely in artistic isolation. This move, perhaps, spared him from having to explain his particular brand of avant-garde genius to audiences who just wanted a nice waltz.

Nancarrow's true calling emerged when he discovered the player piano. Frustrated by the limitations of human performers and the confines of traditional notation, he began punching holes in piano rolls, creating compositions of dizzying complexity and speed that no mere mortal could ever hope to play. It was, in essence, the ultimate form of musical micromanagement, ensuring every note was precisely where he intended.

His "Studies for Player Piano" are not just technical marvels but also strangely compelling, rhythmic explorations that stretched the boundaries of what music could be. While not exactly hummable tunes for a Friday night synagogue service, his dedication to his craft and his singular vision certainly produced something noteworthy. But Jewish? Not so much. He was too busy battling player piano mechanisms to worry about high holidays.
