Gyorgy Ligeti, born in Transylvania to Hungarian Jewish parents, spent his formative years navigating a world increasingly hostile to his heritage. While his family was not particularly religious, the looming shadow of the Holocaust made their Jewishness undeniably central to their lives, culminating in the tragic loss of his father and brother at Auschwitz.

Ligeti himself narrowly escaped the camps, but the experience indelibly marked his artistic consciousness. He would later become a giant of contemporary classical music, pioneering techniques like micropolyphony, which, let's be honest, sounds far more complex than it is to simply enjoy. His compositions, often characterized by dense textures and slow, shimmering changes, were anything but conventional.

He achieved a rare kind of mainstream fame for an avant-garde composer when Stanley Kubrick appropriated his music for "2001: A Space Odyssey." Turns out, the sounds of existential dread and cosmic wonder were perfect for a movie about a giant black monolith. We're still not sure if Ligeti saw the movie, but he certainly cashed the checks. Score one for making challenging art accessible... via science fiction.
