John Coltrane

John Coltrane, born in Hamlet, North Carolina, grew up in a household steeped in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. His grandfather was a minister, and his father was a lay leader, ensuring that young John received a thorough grounding in Christian faith and tradition. This background, however, proved insufficient to imbue him with even a scintilla of Jewish identity or origin. So, no ancient Semitic roots here, just good old American ones.

Coltrane's spiritual journey later led him towards a universalist perspective, incorporating elements from various world religions, but never specifically Judaism. He was a seeker, for sure, but his seeking didn't involve any trips to shul or attempts to decipher the Talmud. One could say he found his own form of spiritual enlightenment through the saxophone, which is, admittedly, less traditional than a bar mitzvah but far more melodic.
