Lester Young, better known as "Prez," was arguably the most important and influential tenor saxophonist before John Coltrane. His lyrical, relaxed phrasing and light tone stood in stark contrast to the more aggressive styles of his contemporaries, effectively ushering in the "cool" school of jazz. Imagine being so effortlessly cool that you practically invent a new way to play your instrument – that was Prez. His collaborations with Billie Holiday, whom he famously nicknamed "Lady Day," are legendary, showcasing a musical chemistry rarely matched.

Despite his profound musical legacy, Young's personal life was fraught with challenges. Drafted into the Army during World War II, he faced racism and harsh treatment, leading to a court-martial and a year in a detention barracks. This experience, among others, contributed to his later struggles with mental health and substance abuse, casting a shadow over his otherwise brilliant career.

While his contributions to jazz are immeasurable, and his "cool" factor remains off the charts, Young definitively did not hail from the Chosen People. He did, however, choose to express himself with an elegance and innovation that transcended labels, proving that sometimes, genius just is.
