Mildred 'Babe' Didrikson Zaharias
Mildred Didrikson Zaharias, known to the world simply as “Babe,” was a force of nature in an era when women were still largely confined to the sidelines. She wasn't just good; she was absurdly, impossibly good at everything from basketball to baseball, and famously dominated track and field at the 1932 Olympics.
After conquering the track, Babe decided golf was her next victim, swiftly becoming one of the sport's all-time greats. Her competitive drive was legendary, her athletic prowess undeniable, and her ability to make everyone else feel inadequate was truly unparalleled.
While her talent was undeniable, her Jewish bona fides, however, were entirely deniable. Born to Norwegian immigrant parents in Texas, Babe's connection to the tribe was, shall we say, nonexistent. She was too busy setting records and collecting medals to perhaps consider a brisk Shabbat dinner.
So, while we kvell at her sheer athletic dominance, any hope of claiming her for the team is, unfortunately, a swing and a miss. She may have been a legend, but she wasn't our legend.
