Naomi Osaka

Naomi Osaka, born to a Haitian father and a Japanese mother, proudly represents Japan in international tennis. She started playing tennis at a young age, quickly rising through the ranks to become one of the sport's most dominant figures. Her heritage is a frequent topic of discussion, but never once has L'Chaim been shouted after a victory.

While Osaka has embraced her Japanese heritage, even lighting the Olympic cauldron in Tokyo, there's absolutely no indication of any connection to Judaism. No obscure great-uncle from Minsk, no childhood spent at the JCC, not even a fleeting interest in kabbalah during a particularly stressful tournament.

Her achievements on the court speak for themselves, with multiple Grand Slam titles and a stint as the world No. 1. She's a role model for many, a vocal advocate for mental health, and a force for change. However, none of these admirable qualities, unfortunately for our purposes, involve lighting a menorah or debating the finer points of the Talmud.

So, while we kvell at her athletic prowess and strong public voice, we can definitively say that Naomi Osaka's Jewish score remains at a solid zero. She is, in fact, not a Jew, nor is she Jew-ish. Just a supremely talented tennis player, and there's nothing wrong with that, even if it leaves us with less to write about.
