Born in New Orleans, Sidney Bechet was a true pioneer, picking up the clarinet at six and soon mastering the saxophone, an instrument he would make his own. He toured extensively, bringing his fiery, vibrato-laden style to audiences across the globe and influencing generations of musicians.

While his Jewishness was, shall we say, non-existent, his contributions to the cultural tapestry of the 20th century were immense. He was a prolific composer, writing classics like "Petite Fleur," and his artistry transcended borders, particularly in France, where he became a beloved superstar.

Bechet's life, though brilliant musically, was not without its rough edges, including stints in jail. Yet, his musical legacy endures, a testament to his undeniable talent and his role in shaping the sound of jazz. If only he'd penned a klezmer tune or two, he might have nudged that "O" score.
