Stan Getz

Stan Getz, born Stanley Gayetski, certainly had the "O" covered. His grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Ukraine, ensuring a solid 5 in the origin department, regardless of how much lox he actually consumed. However, his Jewish identity (I score) was, shall we say, less pronounced than his saxophone solos. He wasn't exactly lighting Shabbat candles between sets. In fact, if his life had a soundtrack, it would probably be more "Girl from Ipanema" than "Hava Nagila."

Yet, Getz was undeniably kvell-worthy. He transformed the sound of jazz, bringing cool jazz to the forefront and later popularizing bossa nova with iconic albums like "Getz/Gilberto." His smooth, lyrical playing earned him the nickname "The Sound" for a reason. He racked up Grammys, played with the greats, and left an indelible mark on music.

Unfortunately, Getz also had a long and very public struggle with drug and alcohol addiction, which made him, at times, a less-than-charming individual. So, while his musical genius brought immense nachas, his personal demons sometimes made you want to kvetch. Still, the music endures, proving that sometimes, you just need a great sax solo to overlook a multitude of sins.
