Sviatoslav Richter, born in Zhytomyr (then Russian Empire, now Ukraine), rose to become one of the 20th century's most revered pianists. His prodigious talent and formidable technique earned him comparisons to legendary figures, and his vast repertoire spanned centuries, from Bach to Prokofiev.
