Billie Jean King
Billie Jean King, born Billie Jean Moffitt, certainly left her mark on the world of tennis, and then some. With 39 Grand Slam titles to her name, she proved that women could, in fact, play a decent game. Who knew?
Beyond her prowess on the court, King became a leading voice for gender equality, most famously with her "Battle of the Sexes" match against Bobby Riggs. She handily defeated him, proving to all the chauvinists out there that a woman could, indeed, beat a man at something other than nagging. Mazel tov to that.
She co-founded the Women's Tennis Association and the Women's Sports Foundation, ensuring that future generations of female athletes would have a slightly less uphill battle than she did. A true mensch, even if she wasn't one of ours. We'll forgive her the lack of Jewish identity purely for the kvell-worthiness of shattering glass ceilings.
